Farm Diversification Ideas For 2021

Is It for me?

With any farm diversification project, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

How much you want to be involved is going to dictate at what level it operates.

Producing chutneys from your vegetables and selling locally is going to be a very different operation than trying to sell to national retailers.

Starting small and perfecting your skills and knowledge before scaling is the route many go.

But with a larger budget, you may be able to skip many of the steps and employ a team (or marketing agency like ourselves) to help you grow.

What Not To Do

Our main advice as an agricultural marketing consultant is not to jump into something without consideration.

Do not assume what is right for your neighbour’s farm is right for you. It’s important to look at the market and analyse what viable options are available, and what might have peaked in viability.

Over the past 5 years, gin has been a popular farm diversification project. But gin sales peaked in November 2018 and are now in decline.

The market is also saturated with excellent producers from all 4 corners of the UK, making it a challenging place to make an impression.

Funding

If you are looking to diversify, financial help is available. In Late 2019 a £35m budget to help farmers diversify was launched. You can find out more about it here.
